Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by parasitic worms living in the arteries of the lungs and occasionally in the right side of the heart. It affects many species of animals, including dogs and cats and is spread by mosquitoes. Dogs and cats of any age, breed, or living status (indoor or outdoor) are susceptible to heartworm infestation. Treatment for heartworm disease in dogs is a complicated, lengthy, and expensive process. Since no effective treatment for heartworm disease in cats is available, prevention measures for both indoor and outdoor cats are especially important. Fortunately safe, easy and inexpensive monthly medications are available from MVAH to protect both dogs and cats from this dangerous disease. More information about heartworm disease may be found at the American Heartworm Society.

MVAH Tips

Teach your children how to be a responsible pet owner.  Don't say "yes" to a new puppy or kitten until the family understands and agrees to the roles and responsibilies of each family member.
